ADB Funds Thailand Airport Infrastructure, Climate Monitoring
Updated June 10, 2025
thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) is set for infrastructure upgrades thanks to a $68.74 million loan agreement between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Thai government. The funds will support resilient infrastructure development at U-Tapao Airport, enhancing connectivity and bolstering climate impact monitoring efforts.
The agreement, finalized in Bangkok, was signed by Deputy Finance Minister julapun Amornvivat and ADB Country Director Anouj Mehta. The project focuses on improving access roads to U-Tapao International Airport. Plans include a 1.92-kilometer extension of Intercity Motorway No. 7 and expansion of a 5.65-kilometer section of National Highway No. 3.
Beyond road construction, the initiative will also establish climate impact monitoring systems managed by the Department of Highways (DOH). This aims to support Thailand’s transition to a low-carbon transport system,a key component of lasting infrastructure development.
“To ensure resilient infrastructure in Thailand, ADB aims to mitigate the key risks linked to rising temperatures and increasing precipitation in the design and construction of the roads,” said Mehta.
Mehta added that the project will use green cement and a ”green campsite” concept for construction, incorporating solar panels, energy storage, and responsible waste and water management.
The ADB has provided Thailand with $7.4 billion in loans, grants, and technical assistance since 1968,supporting various sectors including energy, transport and waste management. The current project aims to create a sustainable land transport network, connecting rail, road, and air transport within the EEC, a hub for industries like smart electronics and biotechnology.
What’s next
the road construction is expected to provide a sustainable land transport network and support multimodal transport, connecting rail, road, and air transport in the EEC.
