Expanding Access to Specialized Eating disorder Care
Lombardy is taking notable steps to address the growing need for extensive care for individuals struggling with eating disorders. A new resolution, spearheaded by welfare Councilor Guido Bertolaso, will establish specialized residential centers for both adults and minors diagnosed with anorexia, bulimia, and other nutrition-related disorders (DNA). This initiative aims to overhaul the existing support network, creating facilities that offer a holistic approach to treatment-integrating medical, psychological, and therapeutic interventions.
These centers, designed to accommodate a maximum of 20 patients each, will provide personalized care pathways with a maximum duration of 24 months. the goal is to empower individuals to overcome their illnesses and regain autonomous living. The region is committing substantial financial resources to this effort, allocating approximately €5.72 million annually, beginning in January 2026. This translates to a daily rate of €300 per patient, ensuring access to quality assistance.
A Multidisciplinary Approach to Healing
The emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach is central to the success of this initiative. Rather than focusing solely on the physical manifestations of eating disorders, the new centers will address the underlying psychological and emotional factors contributing to these complex conditions. This integrated care model recognizes the interconnectedness of mind and body in the healing process.
Councilor Bertolaso emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader regional strategy to effectively respond to the increasing prevalence of eating disorders. He highlighted the commitment to creating a “cutting-edge care system” that prioritizes the individual’s well-being and facilitates social reintegration for both patients and their families.
Milan Prioritizes Mental Health with Milan4MentalHealth
Alongside these new residential centers, the city of Milan is reinforcing its commitment to mental well-being thru the return of Milan4mentalhealth, an initiative designed to elevate mental health as a central topic in social and political discourse. This year’s edition, scheduled throughout October in conjunction with World Mental Health Day (October 10th), will place a particular focus on the connection between mental health and sports, recognizing the positive impact of physical activity on overall well-being.
Milan4mentalhealth fosters collaboration between various organizations – associative, institutional, healthcare, and entrepreneurial – all united by the belief that mental well-being is a collective responsibility. The initiative will showcase projects, prevention activities, and insights into current social phenomena, empowering citizens to take proactive steps towards improving their mental health. It will also share the results of co-planning efforts on mental health, funded by the municipality of Milan and carried out in partnership with local third-sector associations, addressing issues like living conditions, employment, social marginalization, and stigma reduction.
