Swedish Minister for Energy and Industry and Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch has entered a period of heightened tension with public service broadcasters and political allies as the 2026 general election approaches. Recent appearances on SVT and interactions with the press have highlighted a growing conflict over journalistic neutrality and the strategic positioning of the Christian Democrats (KD).

The friction intensified following Busch’s appearance on the SVT program Fördomsshowen, hosted by Emil Persson. In the episode, which aired on April 24, 2026, the KD leader faced a series of questions designed to challenge common stereotypes. While the program touched upon personal topics, reports indicate that Busch refused to answer certain questions, leading to subsequent media analysis of her reluctance to engage with specific lines of inquiry.

Conflicts Over Journalistic Neutrality

Busch has repeatedly challenged the impartiality of reporters from Sweden’s public broadcaster. In a separate interview regarding energy policy and electric vehicle sales, the Minister accused the SVT reporter of having a politically colored angle. This accusation prompted a sharp response from Karin Ekman, SVT’s responsible publisher, who described Busch’s claims as staggering.

Further tension was noted during an interview on the program 30 minuter with host Anders Holmberg. During the segment, Busch questioned the relevance of Holmberg’s inquiries regarding the removal of Sara Skyttedal. Holmberg later claimed that KD officials had contacted the program multiple times prior to the interview in an attempt to influence the content and limit questions about Skyttedal.

Beyond her disputes with the media, Busch is executing a high-stakes political strategy that may signal a shift in the Swedish government’s dynamics. Reporting from Svenska Dagbladet and other outlets has highlighted an openness between Busch and Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson. The two were seen together at a Volvo event in Gothenburg, an interaction that both parties’ organizations publicized.

In a podcast appearance on Viktor möter, Busch described this perceived flirtation with the Social Democrats as a tactical move. She stated that this approach provides the Christian Democrats with greater weight in negotiations.

This strategy coincides with increasing public criticism of her coalition partners. Busch has expressed skepticism regarding the government agreement between the Moderates and the Sweden Democrats (SD). In a statement to Svenska Dagbladet, she questioned the work capacity of SD leader Jimmie Åkesson for the role of Prime Minister, asserting that when comparing their calendars for the current mandate period, Åkesson does not work as much in relation to her own workload.

Upcoming Election Engagements

As the campaign for the September 2026 election accelerates, Busch’s relationship with the media remains strained. She is notably the only party leader who will not participate in Sveriges Radio’s Fördrink party leader debate scheduled for May 6, 2026. She will be replaced by Nike Örbrink. When asked for a reason for her absence, press secretary Elisabeth Wanngård stated that the party had no comments.
