Overview
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is currently battling concurrent outbreaks of mpox, cholera, and malaria, alongside a newly declared outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). On September 4,2025,the DRC ministry of Public Health officially announced the 16th Ebola outbreak in the country, following laboratory confirmation of the Ebola virus (formerly Zaire Ebolavirus) in samples taken from patients in the Bulape Health Zone,Kasai Province Virological.org.
This outbreak is occurring in a remote area with limited access to healthcare, a pattern consistent with the 15 previous Ebola outbreaks experienced in the DRC PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases. the re-emergence of Ebola underscores the ongoing risk of spillover events from unknown reservoir hosts.
Initial Response and Diagnosis
Late August 2025 saw local health authorities in Bulape Health Zone raise concerns about cases presenting with symptoms of hemorrhagic fever, accompanied by fatalities among both patients and healthcare workers. Suspecting EVD, a buccal swab from a fatal case and blood samples from five other suspected cases were collected and sent to the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale (INRB) in Kinshasa, the national reference laboratory, for confirmation and whole genome sequencing (WGS) virological.org.
