Updated May 22, 2024
NVIDIA and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) are joining forces to promote sovereign AI for European public service media. The collaboration seeks to provide the media industry with access to reliable cloud and AI technologies.
The partnership, announced at NVIDIA GTC paris at VivaTech, unites NVIDIA with the EBU, a leading alliance of public service media comprising over 110 organizations across 50+ countries and reaching more than 1 billion people. The focus is on constructing sovereign AI and cloud frameworks, enhancing workforce skills, and fostering an AI ecosystem to create a more accessible and resilient European media landscape.
This initiative aims to establish a stronger foundation for public service media to leverage European cloud infrastructure and AI services. These services will be governed by European policy, adhere to European data protection and privacy regulations, and reflect European values.
Sovereign AI allows countries to develop and implement artificial intelligence using local resources. By investing in this, European nations can protect their cultural identity, strengthen public trust, and encourage innovation tailored to their specific requirements. The collaboration will empower media innovation in Europe.
Michael Eberhard, chief technology officer at ARD/SWR and chair of the EBU Technical Committee, said, “We are proud to collaborate with NVIDIA to drive the growth of sovereign AI and cloud services. By advancing these capabilities together, we’re helping ensure that powerful, compliant and accessible media services are made available to all EBU members — powering innovation, resilience and strategic autonomy across the board.”
To bolster the development of sovereign AI technologies, NVIDIA and the EBU will establish frameworks that prioritize independence and public trust. This will help ensure that AI serves the interests of Europeans while preserving the autonomy of media organizations. The collaboration will also provide public service media companies with tools to deliver personalized services and content advice systems, emphasizing openness, accountability, and cultural identity. This will be achieved through investment in sovereign cloud and AI infrastructure and software platforms.
NVIDIA is also providing resources from it’s Deep Learning Institute, offering European media organizations training programs to create an AI-ready workforce. This supports the EBU’s efforts to ensure news integrity in the age of AI.
The EBU and its partners are investing in local data centers and cloud platforms that support sovereign technologies, helping members achieve secure, cost-effective, and energy-efficient AI training, while promoting AI research and development.
Antonio Arcidiacono, chief technology and innovation officer at the EBU, said, “Building sovereign cloud and AI capabilities based on EBU’s Dynamic Media Facility and Media eXchange Layer architecture requires strong cross-industry collaboration. By collaborating with NVIDIA, as well as a broad ecosystem of media technology partners, we are fostering a shared foundation for trust, innovation and resilience that supports the growth of European media.”
What’s next
The collaboration seeks to foster discussions between the cloud and AI industry and European regulators, helping ensure the development of practical solutions that benefit both the general public and media organizations, ultimately enhancing the European media landscape through sovereign AI.
