Ecatepec Blockades: Union Demands Payment from Authorities
Ecatepec Workers Block Roads, Claiming Unpaid Wages
ECATEPEC, Mexico – Frustrated municipal workers in Ecatepec, Mexico, resorted to blocking roads on Tuesday, claiming they haven’t been paid their December salaries. Pedro César Montoya, secretary general of the SUTEYM union, told Milenio Televisión that the workers, manny of whom are employed by the Ecatepec municipality and the Sapase water utility, are desperate.
“They are the ones most affected,” Montoya said. “They haven’t even received their first paycheck for December.”
Montoya expressed concern that even this drastic measure doesn’t guarantee payment of holiday bonuses, vacation pay, and other legally mandated benefits. He emphasized that the union has participated in numerous negotiation sessions and has been willing to compromise on certain benefits, but they insist on the fulfillment of previously agreed-upon terms.
“we deeply regret what’s happening in the municipality,” Montoya said, noting that attempts to schedule a meeting with the governor have been met with delays. “they say the authorities want to keep talking, but actions speak louder than words.”
Montoya directly blamed eli Benjamín Hernández Rodríguez, director of Sapase, for mismanaging resources, and also criticized Ecatepec Mayor jesús Palacios for failing to address the workers’ concerns.
