Ecatepec Paralyzed: Suteym Workers Block Major Roads Over Unpaid Wages
ECATEPEC, Mexico – Frustrated by months of unpaid wages and benefits, members of the sindicato Único de Trabajadores de los Poderes, Municipios e Instituciones descentralizadas del Estado de México (Suteym) launched a series of escalating roadblocks across Ecatepec early Wednesday morning.
The blockades, which began shortly after 6:00 a.m., have effectively paralyzed major thoroughfares throughout the municipality, including:
Vía López Portillo at the DIF
Venta de carpio near the gas station
R-1 at its intersection with Periférico Oriente
Vía Morelos at La Y Griega
* avenida Central at Río de los Remedios
Suteym members, representing workers from both the municipal government and the Sistema de Agua Potable, Alcantarillado y Saneamiento (Sapase), are demanding the immediate payment of outstanding salaries, year-end bonuses, vacation pay, food vouchers, and adjustments to income tax withholdings.
“We have been patient, but the authorities have ignored our pleas,” said Edson Sánchez, Suteym’s institution secretary in Ecatepec. “We are owed wages dating back to 2021, and this year’s bonuses and benefits remain unpaid. We have no choice but to take this drastic action to be heard.”
The union warned that if water and other essential services are disrupted as a result of the blockades, the responsibility lies solely with the municipal government and Sapase.
Mexibús Service Disrupted
The blockades have also severely impacted public transportation, with several stations along Line 1 of the Mexibús system forced to suspend service. Affected stations include DIF, León de los Aldama, and unitec.
The Mexibús is urging commuters to check for updates on affected routes and plan their journeys accordingly.
Apology to Citizens
While emphasizing the urgency of their demands, Suteym leaders expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to Ecatepec residents.
“We understand the disruption these blockades are causing,” Sánchez said. “But we are fighting for our livelihoods and the well-being of our families. We hope the government will finally take our concerns seriously and negotiate a fair resolution.”
As the day progresses, Suteym members are expected to decide whether to expand the blockades to include additional roads and access points throughout Ecatepec.
