Japanese rock band coldrain released the official music video for “EX-HUMANITY” on July 17, 2026, marking the first visual release from their upcoming album Re:Birth, set for global release on October 21, 2026. The video, directed by Hiroshi Tanaka, debuted on YouTube with over 2 million views within 24 hours, according to the band’s official channel.

The track, which features lyrics including “this is danger danger emergency life without identity danger danger look what we’ve become EX-HUMANITY I’ve got no way to fly,” explores themes of existential crisis and societal fragmentation. Vocalist Kiyoshi Sugimoto described the song as “a visceral reaction to the erosion of individuality in the digital age” in a press statement released July 15, 2026, by their label, Sony Music Entertainment Japan.

“EX-HUMANITY” follows the band’s 2024 album Chronos, which debuted at No. 3 on Japan’s Oricon Albums Chart. The new project marks a shift toward heavier instrumentation and more explicit political commentary, according to a July 16, 2026, report by Rolling Stone Japan. The album’s title, Re:Birth, suggests a thematic focus on rebirth and resistance, with band guitarist Tetsuya “Tets” Koyanagi stating in a July 14, 2026, interview with Blender that “we’re trying to reclaim the chaos of creation in a world that’s trying to control everything.”

The music video for “EX-HUMANITY” features surreal imagery of fractured mirrors, algorithmic landscapes, and distorted human figures, visually interpreting the song’s lyrics about identity dissolution. Director Tanaka, known for his work on Evil Dead: The Musical (2019), described the concept as “a meditation on how technology alienates us from our own humanity.” The video’s aesthetics align with coldrain’s established style, which blends post-hardcore with electronic elements and theatrical stage production.

冷雨 (coldrain) formed in 2005 in Tokyo and gained international recognition with their 2010 album Re:Birth, which was re-released in 2015 with additional tracks. Their 2022 single “Avalanche” reached No. 2 on Billboard’s Japan Hot 100 chart. The band has toured extensively across Asia, Europe, and North America, with a 2025 North American tour scheduled to support Re:Birth.

Industry analysts note the band’s strategic timing for the “EX-HUMANITY” release. “This comes at a moment when global conversations about AI and digital identity are intensifying,” said Akira Sato, a music industry analyst at Mizuho Securities, in a July 17, 2026, interview with Japan Times. “Their thematic alignment with contemporary concerns could boost their visibility in both domestic and international markets.”

The band’s management team confirmed in a July 16, 2026, statement that Re:Birth will include 12 tracks, with “EX-HUMANITY” serving as the lead single. Pre-order options for the album include exclusive merchandise and limited-edition vinyl pressings. The band’s official website reports that 80% of pre-orders for the album were placed within the first 48 hours of the announcement.

冷雨’s latest work continues a trend in Japanese rock music toward introspective, socially conscious lyrics. Comparisons to bands like X Japan and Dir En Grey are common in critical analyses, though the group’s fusion of electronic elements sets them apart. Re:Birth is expected to compete with other 2026 releases from major Japanese acts, including a new album from 100% and a reissue of Luna Sea’s classic catalog.

As of July 18, 2026, the “EX-HUMANITY” music video remains among the top 10 most-watched Japanese music videos on YouTube, with viewership data showing a 65% increase in international viewers compared to the band’s previous releases. The track has also been added to rotation on several Japanese radio stations, including J-Wave and TBS Radio.
