Zurich, Switzerland – February 10, 2026 – In a surprising result that challenges conventional wisdom about cleaning product efficacy, Migros’ Nature Clean drain cleaner has topped the latest rankings from the Swiss consumer magazine “Kassensturz”. The eco-friendly product outperformed a field of ten commercially available drain cleaners, scoring a 5 out of 5 and earning a “Good” overall rating.

The result is particularly noteworthy given the historical dominance of chemically-based drain cleaners in the market. Mellerus Abfluss Frei followed closely behind with a score of 4.8, also receiving a “Good” rating. Rorax and Tandil both achieved scores of 4.5, while W5, Sipuro, and Flup earned more moderate scores of 4.3. At the lower end of the spectrum, Drano, Martec, and Potz all received ratings of “unsatisfactory,” with two scoring only 3.5 points.

The “Kassensturz” testing revealed a significant disparity in performance among the products tested. Many failed to completely dissolve artificially generated dirt, suggesting a gap between marketing claims and actual cleaning power. This finding underscores the importance of independent testing for consumers seeking effective solutions to common household problems.

Growing Concerns Over Chemical Drain Cleaners

The success of Nature Clean comes amid increasing scrutiny of traditional drain cleaners and their potential environmental and health impacts. According to ecotoxicologist Cornelia Kienle, as reported by “Kassensturz,” these products are among the most problematic household items due to their highly corrosive nature. Kienle cautioned against improper use, highlighting the dangers of combining different cleaning agents.

“If one has already treated a drain with an acid-based bathroom cleaner and then adds an alkaline drain cleaner, toxic chlorine gas can be produced,” Kienle warned. “This gas is highly toxic and can cause respiratory irritation or poisoning even in small amounts.”

Kienle further advised using protective gear – gloves and eye protection – when handling drain cleaners containing strong alkalis. She also suggested considering environmentally friendly alternatives, such as traditional dish soap, baking soda and vinegar, or mechanical cleaning methods.

Migros’ Nature Clean: A Rising Star in Eco-Friendly Cleaning

Migros, the Swiss retail cooperative, offers Nature Clean as a 1-liter bottle, priced at CHF 6.50 (CHF0.65 per 100ml), according to its website. The product is designed to gently dissolve greasy residues, unpleasant odors, and stubborn dirt like hair, reducing blockages and making them easier to flush away. Importantly, the formulation is designed not to attack drainpipes or seals.

The “Kassensturz” findings align with a broader trend toward eco-friendly cleaning products gaining market share. A 2025 test by K-Tipp, a Swiss consumer organization, found that Migros’ Nature Clean all-purpose cleaner offered the best combination of cleaning power and gentle ingredients, surpassing even Coop’s Oecoplan cleaner in terms of environmental and skin safety.

Broader Market Trends: The Rise of Eco-Conscious Consumers

The success of Nature Clean and other eco-friendly cleaners reflects a growing consumer demand for sustainable products. While price remains a key factor for many shoppers, an increasing number are willing to pay a premium for products that minimize environmental impact and prioritize health and safety. This shift is driving innovation in the cleaning industry, with companies investing in research and development to create effective, eco-friendly formulations.

Globally, the drain unblocker market is competitive, with brands like Sainsbury’s, HG, Ecozone, Waitrose, Mr Muscle, Delphis, M&S, and Buster all vying for market share, as reported by The Independent. However, the trend towards enzyme-based, eco-friendly options, like Delphis’ Eco drain cleaner, is gaining momentum, particularly among consumers seeking alternatives to harsh chemicals.

The “Kassensturz” test results provide a valuable resource for Swiss consumers navigating the drain cleaner market. The clear demonstration that an eco-friendly product can achieve top performance is likely to further accelerate the adoption of sustainable cleaning solutions and encourage other manufacturers to prioritize environmental responsibility.
