Eco-Friendly Poush Mela Returns to Santiniketan: NGT Guidelines Ensured
Poush Mela in Santiniketan to be Eco-Friendly
Santiniketan is preparing for the traditional Poush Mela, which will focus on environmental sustainability after five years. The event will take place at the Purba Palli fairground.
Binay Kumar Soren, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati, and environmentalist Subhas Dutta addressed the environmental guidelines set by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). They highlighted the importance of pollution control during the fair.
Soren stated, “The fair will be eco-friendly, but the duration is yet to be decided. The decision is pending approval from the executive committee.” The Santiniketan Trust will organize the fair with support from Visva-Bharati.
Dutta confirmed that he is a lifetime member of the Santiniketan Poush Mela Observation Committee, in line with a court ruling. He emphasized that they will actively contribute rather than just observe.
Plans for the fair include eliminating plastic usage, installing bio-toilets, and controlling sound levels. These measures are part of the commitment to create a more sustainable event for visitors and the community.
