Ecuadorian Boys Found Dead After Military Detention
Nation Mourns as bodies of Missing Ecuadorian Boys Found Incinerated
Guayaquil, Ecuador – A wave of grief and outrage has swept across Ecuador after the bodies of four missing boys were discovered incinerated in a marshland area near Guayaquil. The tragic finding confirms the worst fears of the nation, which had been gripped by hope and anger since the boys’ disappearance on December 8th.
Steven Medina (11), Nehemías Arboleda (15), and brothers Ismael (15) and Josué Arroyo (14) vanished after being detained by a military patrol. Disturbing video footage showed the boys being subdued and beaten inside a military vehicle, sparking nationwide protests and demands for justice.”We want them alive!” the crowd chanted outside the Guayaquil courthouse just moments before news of the boys’ deaths broke, shattering the fragile hope that had sustained them.
Inside the courtroom, 16 members of the Ecuadorian Air Force implicated in the boys’ disappearance faced formal charges of forced disappearance, a crime punishable by up to 26 years in prison. Judge Deniss Ugalde ordered the suspects held in preventative detention for 90 days as the inquiry continues.
The grim discovery in Taura, a poverty-stricken town located 46 kilometers from Guayaquil, followed a tip from police. The area, known for its high crime rates and the presence of organized crime, is also home to a military base.
A key witness, referred to as “The Samaritan,” provided crucial details about the boys’ final hours. He recounted how the boys, beaten and naked, arrived at his doorstep seeking help. He gave them water, clothing, and allowed them to use his phone to call one of their fathers.
However, before police could arrive, two masked men on motorcycles abducted the boys, taking them towards a nearby river. Authorities believe this is where the boys met their tragic end.
The Ecuadorian Assembly has declared three days of national mourning and called on President Daniel Noboa to ensure those responsible for this heinous crime are brought to justice.
