Raj Kundra and Legal Woes: Summary
Raj Kundra was arrested in July 2021 after four women reported that they were coerced into making pornographic films under the false pretense of acting opportunities. He was released from Arthur Jail in September that year.
More recently, in November 2024, law enforcement officials conducted searches at around 15 locations in Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh. This action is part of a money laundering investigation linked to a Ponzi scam connected to the cryptocurrency platform Gain Bitcoin. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) previously froze Kundra’s assets, including properties worth Rs 98 crore, due to this investigation.
The investigation began in 2018 when the ED looked into Amit Bharadwaj’s fraudulent schemes. Although Shilpa Shetty, Kundra’s wife, was not initially implicated, her assets were notified for provisional attachment in April 2024. Both Kundra and Shetty deny any wrongdoing. Kundra has appeared in person for multiple ED summons, while Shetty has submitted documents through representatives.
The couple has contested the ED’s order requiring them to vacate their properties, including their home in Juhu and a farmhouse near Pune. As a result, the Bombay High Court has temporarily halted the eviction process.
In response to ongoing reports linking her to the case, Shilpa Shetty’s lawyer labeled these reports as false and misleading. He stated there has been no ED raid on her and emphasized that she is not involved in the case. He urged media outlets to avoid using her name and image in connection with the investigation.
