Hospital Emergency Department Expansions Address Rising Patient Volume
Updated May 31, 2025
across the nation, health systems are committing millions to expand and renovate their emergency departments. These investments are driven by projections of increased admissions and the need to improve patient care.
Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh is investing $43 million to enlarge and remodel the emergency department at Allegheny General Hospital. the project, slated for completion in late 2027, seeks to boost efficiency for the 40,000 patients the ED treats annually. This emergency medicine expansion highlights the growing demand for services.
In Westminster, Md., LifeBridge Health’s Carroll Hospital launched a $9.5 million renovation in April. The two-year project addresses rising capacity needs and the increasing complexity of medical cases seen in its ED, which serves 47,000 patients each year.
Other hospitals completed similar projects recently. Mount Sinai South nassau in Oceanside, N.Y., unveiled its expanded ED in March as part of a $50 million renovation. The facility can now accommodate 75,000 patients annually.
Novant Health in Winston-Salem, N.C.,doubled the size of Mint Hill Medical Center’s ED in Charlotte,N.C., with a $45 million investment. The expansion added 19 rooms and a hybrid procedural space to handle increased patient volume, bringing the department to 44,000 square feet.
Northern Arizona Healthcare is taking a different approach. Instead of expanding the ED at its Flagstaff hospital, the system is renovating the existing space to improve patient throughput while constructing a new hospital. Space limitations prevent adding square footage, so redesigning patient flow is the only option, the system said in a May 15 release.
What’s next
As patient volume continues to rise, expect more health systems to invest in emergency department expansions and redesigns to meet the growing demand for emergency medicine.
