Tokyo — Japan’s head coach of the national rugby union team, Eddie Jones, has been suspended for four games and fined after verbally abusing local match officials during an under-23 team tour of Australia in April, the Japan Rugby Football Union (JRFU) announced Wednesday. The disciplinary action, which includes a salary reduction, bars Jones from coaching duties for six weeks, covering key fixtures in May and June.

The suspension follows an investigation into Jones’s conduct during Japan’s Under-23 tour of Australia, where he made “inappropriate remarks” that caused discomfort to match officials and related parties, according to the JRFU. Jones, 66, issued a public apology, acknowledging his behavior and expressing regret.

“I accept the disciplinary action of the JRFU relating to the U23 Japan national team tour of Australia,” Jones said in a statement. “Some inappropriate remarks that I made caused discomfort to local match officials and other related parties. I would like to offer my sincere apologies to everyone involved. I deeply regret my behavior and words and will make every effort to ensure that this doesn’t happen again.”

The ban will see Jones miss Japan’s next four international fixtures, including two matches against a Hong Kong China Select team on May 22 and 29, a game against the Māori All Blacks on June 27, and the team’s Nations Championship opener against Italy in Tokyo on July 4. The suspension also includes a financial penalty, though the exact amount was not disclosed by the JRFU.

Jones, one of rugby’s most outspoken coaches, has previously led Australia, England, and South Africa’s World Cup-winning team in 2007. He returned to Japan in December 2023 for a second stint as head coach, following a successful period with the national team that included a historic quarterfinal appearance at the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

The disciplinary action underscores growing expectations for professionalism in international rugby, particularly in interactions with match officials. While Jones’s coaching record remains strong, the incident highlights the challenges of balancing fiery leadership with ethical conduct in high-pressure environments.

Japan’s rugby program has faced scrutiny in recent years over its handling of disciplinary matters, particularly regarding foreign coaches. The JRFU’s decision reflects its commitment to upholding standards of conduct within the sport, even for high-profile figures.

The suspension does not affect Jones’s role as head coach beyond the specified games, and he remains eligible to return to duties following the six-week ban. However, the incident has reignited discussions about the role of verbal discipline in coaching, particularly in Asia, where cultural sensitivities around communication can differ from Western norms.
