UCI Suspends Official for Sexual Harassment Following Athlete’s Report

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has issued a one-year suspension to Edgar Carballo Gonzalez, a cycling official, following a report of sexual harassment. The decision comes after an examination conducted by the UCI Ethics Commission, triggered by a complaint filed through the institution’s confidential reporting platform, SpeakUP.
Incident Details and Commission Findings
The athlete reported an incident of a sexual nature that occurred within her van,parked in the official parking area during a UCI international Calendar event. According to the UCI’s statement,the athlete detailed unwanted sexual advances,inappropriate physical contact,and the use of the term “rape” despite explicitly stating she was in a relationship and did not desire any sexual interaction.
The Ethics Commission concluded that Carballo Gonzalez’s actions constituted a violation of the athlete’s dignity and amounted to sexual harassment. Specifically, the commission found he breached Article 6.4 of the UCI Code of Ethics - concerning the protection of physical and mental integrity – and Article 2.3, which addresses sexual harassment, as outlined in Appendix 1 of the Code.
One-Year Suspension and Right to appeal
As a result of these findings, Carballo Gonzalez has been suspended from all cycling-related activities for one year, effective promptly. This suspension encompasses all roles within the sport, preventing him from participating in any capacity.
The UCI statement clarifies that Carballo Gonzalez retains the right to appeal the Ethics Commission’s decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). This provides him with an possibility to challenge the findings and possibly seek a reversal or modification of the imposed sanction.
