Google’s Edge Sense was a Pixel feature that allowed users to trigger specific apps or system functions by squeezing the sides of the device, according to reporting from Android Police. Unlike its successor, Active Edge, which primarily functioned as a shortcut for Google Assistant, Edge Sense supported a wider variety of customizable launch features.

The feature utilized pressure-sensitive sensors embedded in the phone’s chassis to detect a physical squeeze. This hardware-based trigger operated independently of the screen, enabling users to execute commands without looking at or touching the display.

Google introduced the squeeze functionality with the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL in October 2017. At launch, the feature was marketed as a way to quickly access the Google Assistant, but the underlying system allowed for broader integration with other software tools.

The distinction between Edge Sense and Active Edge centers on flexibility. Active Edge served as the official branding for the Assistant-centric squeeze shortcut. Edge Sense, however, represented the broader capability of the hardware to launch various features based on the user’s configuration.

As Google iterated on the Pixel line, the company shifted toward a more streamlined, Assistant-focused approach. This transition effectively limited the squeeze gesture to a single primary function, removing the ability for users to map the physical trigger to a diverse range of third-party apps or system shortcuts.

The removal of broad customization in favor of a single-purpose shortcut mirrored a larger trend in Android development toward centralized AI control. By locking the hardware trigger to Google Assistant, the company ensured a consistent entry point for its voice AI across different Pixel models.

Hardware-based shortcuts like Edge Sense provided a tactile alternative to the gesture-heavy navigation of modern smartphones. While most current Pixel devices rely on screen swipes or power-button long-presses to activate AI features, the pressure-sensitive edges offered a distinct physical interaction model that did not require screen real estate.
