Clever Carpentry Creates Dream Kitchen Without Breaking the Bank
Homeowners Esther and her partner transformed their long, narrow kitchen into a functional and stylish space using clever design and custom carpentry.
The biggest challenge? Making the most of a long, narrow kitchen without sacrificing space or light. The solution? Esther and her partner cleverly divided the room using custom-built wooden units. These units not only provide ample floor-to-ceiling storage but also conceal a hidden utility and bathroom, eliminating the need for an expensive extension.”We wanted to add everything we needed without sacrificing our yards or the beautiful light and greenery they provide,” Esther explains.
The heart of the kitchen is a series of meticulously planned oak units, designed by Esther and crafted by local joiner Craig Davidson. Every detail has been carefully considered, from a dedicated drawer for trays under the oven to a fold-out spice rack.
“I had this kitchen in my head for years,” Esther says. “We used pale oak on the exterior and black oak on the interior to match the flooring in the front of the house. Our goal was to use a minimal number of materials throughout the house while creating a distinct feel in each space.”
Crittall-style bifolding aluminum doors flood the kitchen with soft light, highlighting the sleek polymer concrete worktops and the family’s favourite feature – a stunning brass sink.
Clever Carpentry: Creating a Dream Kitchen on a Budget
NewsDirectory3.com: esther, thank you so much for sharing your incredible kitchen renovation with us. Could you tell our readers about the biggest challenge you faced when redesigning this space?
esther: The biggest challenge was definitely working with the long, narrow shape of the kitchen. We didn’t want to feel cramped or lose any natural light, and we also wanted avoid the expense and upheaval of a major extension.
NewsDirectory3.com: How did you overcome this challenge and achieve your dream kitchen?
Esther: We decided to cleverly divide the room using custom-built wooden units. These units provide ample floor-to-ceiling storage and, cleverly, they conceal a hidden utility and bathroom. This eliminated the need for an extension and maximized the space we had.
NewsDirectory3.com:
That’s genius! What role did carpentry play in bringing your vision to life?
Esther: It played a huge role! My partner and I designed a series of meticulously planned oak units, and we worked with a local joiner, Craig Davidson, who brought our vision to life. Every detail, from a specific drawer for trays under the oven to a fold-out spice rack, was carefully considered.
NewsDirectory3.com: I understand you also made conscious decisions about the materials used. Can you tell us more about that?
Esther: Absolutely. We used pale oak on the exterior of the units and black oak on the interior to complement the flooring in the front of the house. Our goal throughout our home renovation project was to use a minimal number of materials to create a cohesive look while still maintaining a distinct feel in each space.
NewsDirectory3.com: The kitchen looks stunning, especially with the natural light flooding in.
Esther: We’re so happy with how it turned out! The Crittall-style bifolding aluminum doors are fantastic for letting in the light, illuminating the sleek polymer concrete worktops and, of course, our favorite feature – the beautiful brass sink.
