A Moment of Prayer, a Goal, and a Red Card
As Morelos prepared to take the penalty, Cardona dropped to his knees on the Morumbí Stadium pitch, raising his arms and lowering his head in a visible moment of prayer. The tension was palpable. Morelos then calmly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Rafael, leveling the score at 1-1.
But the drama was far from over. What followed was a sequence of events that led to Cardona’s expulsion. Immediately after the goal, Cardona, overcome with emotion, ran not towards his teammates, but directly towards São Paulo goalkeeper Rafael and defender Nahuel Ferraresi – with whom he’d had a heated exchange in the first leg in Medellín.
