As temperatures rise across Europe, public health officials are renewing warnings about the growing threat posed by invasive mosquito species, particularly the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), which has established populations in multiple French regions and poses risks for transmitting diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika virus.

According to regional health authorities in southeastern France, including the city of Saint-Raphaël, proactive surveillance and community-based prevention efforts are now underway ahead of the peak mosquito season. Officials emphasize that early intervention is critical, as the tiger mosquito is active from April through November and thrives in urban and suburban environments where standing water accumulates.

Understanding the Tiger Mosquito Threat

The tiger mosquito, native to Southeast Asia, was first detected in Metropolitan France in 2004 and has since spread to over 60 departments, including Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Occitanie, and Île-de-France. Unlike common house mosquitoes, Aedes albopictus is a daytime biter and can transmit viruses after feeding on an infected person. While local transmission of dengue or chikungunya remains rare in France, health agencies warn that imported cases from travelers returning from endemic areas could spark local outbreaks if the vector is present.

Public Health Response and Prevention Measures

In Saint-Raphaël, municipal authorities have launched a public awareness campaign titled “STOP AUX MOUSTIQUES : TOUS ACTEURS DE LA PRÉVENTION !” urging residents to eliminate breeding sites around homes. Key recommendations include emptying water from flowerpot saucers, gutters, tires, and children’s toys at least once a week, covering water storage containers, and maintaining swimming pools properly. Officials stress that even small amounts of water — such as in a bottle cap — can support mosquito reproduction.

Innovations in Mosquito Control

Alongside traditional prevention, new technologies are being evaluated for outdoor use. In April 2026, French outdoor furniture manufacturer Fermob partnered with technology firm Wiliv to introduce “Mojo,” a solar-powered mosquito-repelling bollard designed for gardens, and terraces. The device emits ultrasonic frequencies and uses a non-toxic, plant-based repellent diffuser to create a protective zone of up to 15 meters. While the manufacturers claim it reduces mosquito presence without chemicals or noise, independent field efficacy data remain limited, and public health agencies continue to recommend proven methods like larval control and personal protection as primary defenses.

Other widely circulated suggestions, such as applying toothpaste to toilet paper rolls to deter mosquitoes, have been shared on social media and in lifestyle publications. However, health authorities and entomologists confirm there is no scientific evidence supporting such home remedies as effective prevention strategies. The World Health Organization and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) advise relying on evidence-based tools, including EPA-registered insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or IR3535, and wearing long sleeves in high-risk areas.

Travel-Related Risks and Surveillance

Public health agencies also highlight the importance of monitoring travelers returning from regions where dengue, Zika, or chikungunya are endemic. In 2025, France reported over 150 imported dengue cases, primarily from the Caribbean, South America, and Southeast Asia. While no sustained local transmission occurred, officials warn that climate change and increasing vector density could alter this risk profile in coming years. Enhanced surveillance, including targeted trapping and rapid response teams, is now active in high-risk departments during peak mosquito activity months.

Residents are encouraged to report mosquito sightings or suspected breeding sites through official municipal channels or national platforms like the ANSES-operated signalement-moustique.anses.fr portal. Early detection enables targeted interventions before populations become established.

As the tiger mosquito continues to adapt to temperate climates, experts stress that sustained community engagement, combined with scientifically validated control measures, remains the most effective way to minimize public health risks. While innovations like the Mojo bollard offer supplementary options, they do not replace the need for vigilance in eliminating standing water and using proven personal protection methods.
