Egypt and Chad Strengthen livestock Cooperation for Enhanced Food Security

Bilateral Talks Focus on Investment and Expertise Sharing
On November 12,2023,Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation,Alaa Farouk,met with Chad’s Minister of Livestock,Abdelrahim El-Tayeb,in Cairo to discuss expanding cooperation within the livestock sector. The meeting took place during joint ministerial commitee sessions co-chaired by both countries’ foreign ministers, with Egypt’s Deputy Agriculture Minister Mostafa El-Sayyad also in attendance.
Discussions centered on leveraging Chad’s ample cattle resources in conjunction with Egypt’s established expertise in areas like breed enhancement and optimized feed strategies.The goal is to significantly increase both meat and dairy production in Chad, contributing to regional food security.
Attracting Investment and Addressing Climate Challenges
Both ministers underscored the crucial role of private sector involvement. They agreed to explore the possibility of hosting a joint investment forum for Egyptian and Chadian businesses to identify opportunities in animal production and feed manufacturing. This initiative is especially timely given the increasing challenges posed by climate change to customary livestock practices.
Recognizing the need for robust animal health infrastructure, the ministers also discussed establishing an Egyptian-operated veterinary vaccine and serum production laboratory within Chad. This would address both local and regional demand, reducing reliance on imports and bolstering disease prevention capabilities.
Capacity Building and Technical Exchange
Egypt committed to expanding training programs for Chadian specialists and technicians through the Egyptian International Centre for Agriculture. These programs will focus on modern animal health practices and intensive production systems, equipping chad with the skills necessary for lasting livestock advancement.
To facilitate the implementation of existing agreements and promote trade, both sides agreed to organize reciprocal visits for specialized technical teams. This will ensure effective activation of previously signed memoranda of understanding and foster increased exchange of agricultural and livestock products.
Strategic Partnership and Regional Development
Minister Farouk emphasized that this collaboration aligns with President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi’s broader strategy of strengthening ties with Chad and other African nations. Egypt aims to provide the necessary technical and logistical support to promote sustainable development and enhance food security across the region.
Minister El-tayeb expressed Chad’s gratitude for Egypt’s ongoing support, stating that chad views Egypt as a key strategic partner. He highlighted Egypt’s unique position to provide the expertise needed to advance Chad’s livestock sector and unlock new investment opportunities.
