Egypt⁤ Secures⁣ LNG Deals Amid Power Crisis

Updated june 14, 2025

Egypt is moving to boost its ⁣liquefied⁣ natural gas (LNG) ‍supply through agreements with energy giants ⁢like Saudi ⁤Aramco, Shell, Vitol, Trafigura, BGN, SOCAR, PetroChina adn Hartree Partners. The deals aim to address persistent power⁢ outages and ‍meet ⁤increasing energy demands across the country.

The agreements, wich span the short and medium term, ⁤seek to⁣ mitigate ‍frustrations and economic losses caused by the ongoing blackouts. Egypt, once a‌ gas exporter, became ⁢a net importer last year due to declining natural gas‌ supplies.

Conflicting reports have⁣ emerged regarding the ⁤specifics of ⁤the deals. One ⁤report indicates Egypt will⁤ receive between 50 and⁢ 60 LNG cargoes ⁤this year, along with 75 already purchased, with the remainder delivered through 2026. This ‍would⁢ total 235 cargoes, costing an estimated $8‌ billion. another report suggests the deals could bring‍ in as manny as 290 cargoes over a two-and-a-half-year period, starting next month.

The⁣ pricing of the ‍LNG cargoes ⁣also varies between ⁤reports. One indicates a premium of 70 to ⁤75 cents ‍above the Dutch TTF hub‌ gas price,⁢ with ‍a nine-month deferred payment.The other⁢ cites a premium⁤ of 80 to 95 cents per million British ⁤thermal units,⁤ with a six-month deferred payment.

What’s next

The influx of LNG is expected to stabilize Egypt’s power supply in the coming months,⁤ reducing the frequency and duration⁤ of blackouts. The government hopes these measures will ease economic strain and public discontent.
