Egypt Eyes Global Poultry Market as Domestic Production Soars
Cairo, Egypt – With a booming domestic poultry industry and a recent avian influenza-free certification from the World Organisation for Animal health, Egypt is setting its sights on expanding poultry exports to bolster foreign currency reserves.
The government aims to tap into new international markets, building on the success of achieving self-sufficiency in poultry production.
“We are looking to open new foreign markets for poultry exports to support Egypt’s foreign currency reserves,” said Abdelaziz Al-Said, head of poultry resources at the Cairo Chamber of Commerce.
Currently, Arab countries, along with some East Asian and african nations, are the primary destinations for Egyptian poultry exports, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture.

Despite the export push, chicken prices on the domestic market remain relatively stable. Today, prices on the poultry exchange range from 85 to 87 pounds per kilo, depending on the region.
The public chicken exchange price has stabilized at 74 pounds per kilo of white chicken. Egypt consumes approximately 150,000 tons of white chicken per month, and the country has achieved an remarkable 97% self-sufficiency in white poultry production.
“The authority is intensifying its campaign in collaboration with the Supply Inquiry Department to monitor the markets strictly,” said Mumtaz Shaheen, head of the General authority of Veterinary Services at the Ministry of Agriculture, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring market stability.
Specialty Breeds See Price Increases
While white chicken prices remain steady, specialty breeds like Sasso chickens have seen a price increase, reaching almost 82 pounds per kilo on the public poultry exchange. White mothers have also hit record prices, reaching 60 pounds per kilo on farms.
At the “Mohamed Adel” Poultry Exchange, sasso prices remained stable at 80 pounds per kilo, while white chickens were recorded at 30 pounds.
The “Munir al-Sakka” chicken exchange mirrored these trends, with white chicken prices at 74 pounds. Local chicken prices hovered around 105 to 110 pounds, while Sasso chicken reached 100 pounds for consumers.
