Sharqeya Governorate to Benefit from EGP 500m‍ Waste-to-Energy Project

A significant investment in enduring waste management is coming to⁤ Egypt’s Sharqeya Governorate. On December 18, 2023, officials⁢ witnessed the signing of a 15-year ‍contract between Sharqeya ⁤Governorate and Gaia Titan, the green energy division of Titan Cement, to construct and ‍operate three municipal solid waste treatment facilities.

Strategic Facility Locations

The new facilities will be strategically located across the governorate: in Al-Ghar (within the Zagazig district), Al-Khattara (Husseiniya district), and Geeta ‍(Belbeis district). The⁣ agreement also encompasses the operation of two sanitary landfill sites, situated in Belbeis and Al-Khattara,dedicated⁣ to the environmentally sound disposal ‍of residual waste.

Processing Capacity and environmental Impact

The project⁢ is designed to process a minimum of⁤ 3,000 tonnes of waste⁣ daily throughout Sharqeya⁢ Governorate. This substantial capacity will ⁣enable the treatment of over one million tonnes of municipal solid waste annually, diverting it from ⁣conventional disposal methods.A key ⁣outcome will be the production of approximately⁢ 200,000 tonnes of option fuel each year, reducing reliance on conventional energy sources.

Investment and Long-Term Goals

With a total investment reaching up to EGP 500 million, the‌ initiative represents a major step towards improved environmental sustainability ⁢in the region.Gaia Titan anticipates ‌a significant reduction ⁣in carbon emissions and enhanced operational efficiency through adherence to⁤ stringent environmental standards. This project directly‌ supports Titan Cement’s⁤ broader strategy to promote green construction practices and maximize the utilization of alternative fuels.

Acting Minister of Environment Manal Awad emphasized the project’s importance in ensuring the safe and‌ responsible disposal of waste, ⁣while Sharqeya Governor Hazem al-Ashmouny highlighted the benefits for the local community.
