JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Muslims in Indonesia are observing Eid al-Fitr today, March 31, 2025, marking the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. The date, corresponding to 1 Shawwal 1446 H in the Hijri calendar, was determined through a combination of astronomical calculations and observations.
Unification of Observance
This year, both the Indonesian government and Muhammadiyah, one of the country’s largest Islamic organizations, agreed on the commencement of Ramadan on March 1, leading to a unified Eid al-Fitr party.
Determining the Date: A Combination of Methods
Muhammadiyah’s Central Leadership, based on reckoning calculations, noted that Ijtimak (conjunction) ahead of Shawwal 1446 H occurred on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 5:59 p.m. Western indonesian Time (WIB). Though, the new moon (hilal) remained below the horizon at sunset across Indonesia.
Applying the principle of istikmal, Muhammadiyah declared Ramadan to last 30 days, thus setting Eid al-Fitr for Monday, March 31, 2025.
The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag),also convened an isbat session on March 29 to determine the start of Shawwal 1446 H. This determination relies on both astronomical calculations and rukyat (hilal observation).
Astronomical data indicated that the new moon’s position remained below the horizon throughout Indonesia, ranging from minus 3 degrees in Papua to minus 1 degree in Aceh.
simultaneous Prayers Expected
The convergence of these calculations and observations suggests a widespread, simultaneous celebration of Eid al-Fitr 2025 across the Indonesian Muslim community.
Eid al-Fitr Prayer Schedule
Eid al-Fitr prayers are scheduled to take place after sunrise and before the time for the zuhr prayer. In Indonesia, these prayers typically commence around 7:00 a.m. WIB, continuing a long-held tradition.
