Mayor Christoph Ihling lauded the renovated facility, stating it represents “an enormous advancement in school and club sport.” He also emphasized the importance of preserving the historical sports venue, noting its contribution to the city’s character.
Ihling expressed gratitude to all those involved in the project, including students and teachers from the Goethe School, a primary user, who had to relocate to other facilities during construction. Headmistress Julia Durner described the revamped Jahnsporthalle as a “feast for the eyes.”
The Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Halle,as it is indeed formally known,underwent both renovation of the existing structure and expansion wiht a new social wing on its east side. This addition features four separate changing rooms, each measuring 28 square meters.
The new wing also includes sanitary facilities with showers, sinks, and toilets, along with equipment and lounge areas for referees, trainers, and sports teachers. A directing cabin, complete with a large glass pane providing a view of the hall, is another key feature.
Roof Design Enhances Space
Inside the historic hall, crews removed the old flooring, installed underfloor heating, and laid a new sports floor. Walls now feature extensive impact protection.
A notable design element is the open roof structure. The original ceiling between the hall and the roof gable was removed for structural reasons, exposing the preserved steel framework. The roof itself had been previously re-covered and received thermal insulation during the interior renovation. The historical roof dormer now serves for exposure and ventilation, complemented by new LED lighting.
Barrier-Free Entrance and Historical Elements
The sports hall’s entrance was relocated from the south to the north side to provide barrier-free access. the entrance leads into a foyer featuring three domes of light in the ceiling. A wall display showcasing historical documents and photos adds a unique touch.
Historically, the Jahnsporthalle served as a riding hall for the infantry regiment stationed in eisenach. During the German Democratic Republic (GDR) era, it functioned as a garage for the People’s Police before becoming the home of BSG Motor Eisenach’s successful handball team in the 1960s.The hall is named after Friedrich ludwig Jahn, known as the father of gymnastics.
Restored Lettering and New Equipment
The historical lettering displaying “Friedrich Ludwig Jahn” has been restored. Created by Eisenach art smith Professor Günther Laufer, the lettering was refurbished in an Erfurt workshop and now adorns the new entrance.
The sports hall also boasts new sports equipment, including climbing poles, basketball hoops, bars, and balance beams.
