Ekin Cheng Fears ‘Leaving a Trace’ and Avoids Live-Action Talent Shows: Would Be Shocked if Filmed Entirely
Ekin Cheng Reflects on “Reunion” Role and Past Bottlenecks in “Popcorn Weekly” Appearance
Hong Kong actor Ekin Cheng will delve into his role as the musically-inclined ”Su Shenghua” in the hit film “Reunion” during a special appearance on ViuTV’s ”Popcorn Weekly” airing tomorrow night.
Joining Cheng will be director Liang Liyan and fellow actor Chen Zhuoxian (Ian), who portrays the younger version of “Su Shenghua.” Liyan revealed that Cheng was his top choice for the role from the outset, citing the character’s need for musicality, kindness, and a childlike innocence – qualities he saw embodied in Cheng.
Cheng,in turn, drew parallels between himself and Ian,stating,”Seeing Ian was like seeing myself who didn’t speak before. I felt like I was like this before.”
The conversation delves into the creative process behind “Reunion,” with Ian sharing his own experiences with musical inspiration, often finding melodies popping into his head during everyday activities. Cheng, who purchased a guitar specifically for the role, even humorously recounted how his wife, Mong Ka-wai, sold it at a discount to a character on the reality show “Living Here and Living there.”
The discussion also touches upon the emotional complexities of “Su Shenghua,” a character known for his passivity. Cheng candidly admits to experiencing similar tendencies in his youth, recalling missed opportunities due to a lack of courage.
“I wanted to date in high school, but because I didn’t have the courage, I only had the word ‘want,'” he shared. “Every time I wanted to open my mouth to confess, the other person had already walked away.”
Cheng further reflects on the challenges of navigating creative bottlenecks, drawing parallels between his own experiences and those of his character.
“Now it is also a bottleneck for me because the world is different from what we are familiar with,” he explained. “Every time I face a bottleneck, I will ask myself: ‘Why did you get through it last time?’ Then you don’t need to think about it anymore.”
The conversation takes a turn towards the modern entertainment landscape, with Cheng expressing reservations about participating in a reality competition show like “National star making.”
“No one will no after the end, but now that technology is developed, everything you do will be left behind, endless,” he stated. “Plus, the whole process of ‘National Star Making’ will also be filmed, this will be very scary.”
Tune in to “Popcorn weekly” tomorrow night to hear more from Ekin Cheng, Liang Liyan, and Chen Zhuoxian as they discuss “Reunion” and their experiences in the entertainment industry.
