EKU Women’s Tennis Extends Win Streak with Dominant Home Performances

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University women’s tennis team continued its strong start to the season, securing back-to-back victories on Sunday at the Greg Adams Tennis Center. The Colonels defeated UNC Greensboro 4-1 and followed up with a 4-2 win over Cumberlands (Ky.), pushing their win streak to three matches.

EKU (3-2) opened its 2024-25 spring schedule with a perfect 2-0 record at home after beginning the season with three consecutive road matches. The team’s resilience and depth were on full display, with standout performances across both singles and doubles play.

Junior Marilou Cote was the star of the day, finishing with a flawless 4-0 record. The Levis, Quebec native clinched the match against UNC Greensboro with a hard-fought three-set victory and dominated her Cumberlands opponent in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Cote also contributed to a crucial doubles win alongside teammate Ceylin Ipek, securing a 7-6 [7-4] tiebreak victory against UNCG.

“Marilou’s performance was exceptional,” said a team spokesperson. “She stepped up when it mattered most and delivered under pressure.”

In the opening match against UNC Greensboro, EKU set the tone early with a tightly contested doubles point. Cote and Ipek’s tiebreak win on court No. 2 proved decisive, giving the Colonels momentum heading into singles play. Sasha Parkhomenko extended EKU’s lead with a commanding 6-3, 6-2 victory on court No. 2, while Zhansaya Bakytzhan added another point with a 7-5, 6-2 win on court No. 4.

Despite a strong effort from UNCG’s Olivia Gallagher, who defeated Masha Fedenko in a three-set battle on court No. 1, Cote sealed the victory for EKU with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 finish in the final two sets of her match.

The Colonels carried their momentum into the second match against Cumberlands, claiming the doubles point with decisive 6-0 and 6-1 wins on courts No. 2 and 3. Cote and Anastasiia Cherniakova delivered straight-set victories in singles, pushing EKU to a 3-0 lead.

Cumberlands fought back with wins on courts No. 1 and 3, but Izem Elif Olcer secured the match-clinching point for EKU with a 6-3, 6-1 victory on court No. 5. Mariia Triska’s match on court No. 6 went unfinished, though she held a 7-5, 1-0 lead at the time.

“The team showed great composure and determination today,” the spokesperson added. “Winning both matches at home is a testament to their hard work and preparation.”

EKU will return to action on Jan. 24 with a unique doubleheader. The Colonels will host Lindsey Wilson College at the Greg Adams Tennis Center at 9 a.m. ET before traveling to face Marshall later that day at 4 p.m.

With momentum on their side, the Colonels look to build on their early-season success as they continue their 2024-25 campaign.
