A severe storm struck Medellín and the Aburrá Valley on October 5, unleashing a total of 263 lightning strikes across the metropolitan region in a span of over four hours, El Colombiano reported. The intense weather event began at 2:30 p.m., driven by incoming low-level moisture from the Pacific Ocean and high atmospheric convergence that rapidly generated large cumulonimbus storm clouds over the mountainous terrain.

Medellín and Copacabana Bear the Brunt of the Electrical Activity

Medellín recorded the heaviest electrical activity during the storm with 95 lightning strikes, according to data from the Early Warning System, known as Siata. Copacabana followed with 52 recorded discharges, while Bello registered 36, Itagüí counted 29, and Sabaneta logged 20. Additional strikes hit La Estrella with 13, Envigado with nine, Caldas with six, and Girardota with three. Barbosa remained the only municipality in the Aburrá Valley without recorded lightning events.

Fifty-Two Monitoring Stations Register Critical Rainfall Accumulations

Siata classified the storm as an extreme event ranging from strong to very strong intensity. Fifty-two monitoring stations across the region captured cumulative rainfall totals exceeding 40 millimeters. Julián Sepúlveda, head of the Siata meteorology team, explained that the weather system formed very locally over southern Medellín, La Estrella, Sabaneta, and Itagüí before intensifying over Bello and the northern sector minutes later.

The event began to form very locally in the south of Medellín and in the municipalities of La Estrella, Sabaneta and Itagüí. There we had the highest intensities in the first moments. Minutes later it intensified over Bello and the north

Rising Water Levels Trigger Community Sirens and Hailstorms

The heavy downpours swelled the Medellín River and surrounding streams, placing 14 water levels under orange alert and eight under red alert. Community emergency sirens activated twice in high-risk zones along the La García stream in Bello and the La Onda and El Plebiscito streams in Sabaneta. In La Estrella, the severe weather brought a notable fall of solid hail. A local disdrometer recorded 57 millimeters of total precipitation, with 7.38 millimeters—or nearly 13 percent of the volume—consisting of hail.

Aburrá Valley Topography Fuels Intense Local Storm Cycles

The heavy concentration of lightning and rain in the Aburrá Valley stems directly from its regional geography. Situated between mountain chains, the valley traps warm daytime air near the surface. As this warm, humid air rises forcefully and collides with colder upper layers of the atmosphere, it creates deep vertical storm clouds that make the subregion prone to frequent and intense electrical storms.
