El Paso 5K Run/Walk Honors Fallen Deputy Herrera – March 8th

El Paso 5K Run/Walk Honors Fallen Deputy Herrera – March 8th

February 25, 2026 Dr. Jennifer Chen Health

The El Paso community will come together on March 8, 2026, for the 6th Annual Deputy Peter J. Herrera Memorial 5K Run/Walk. The event, held at Ascarate Park, serves as a tribute to Sheriff’s Deputy Peter J. Herrera, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty.

Deputy Herrera, 35 years old at the time of his death, was shot during a traffic stop in San Elizario in March 2019 and succumbed to his injuries two days later. The 5K run and walk aims to honor his memory and support a meaningful cause.

Proceeds from the event will directly benefit the Deputy Peter John Herrera Scholarships Fund, providing educational opportunities in his name. This fund aims to support future generations and carry on Deputy Herrera’s legacy of service.

Registration for the event is tiered, with increasing fees as the race date approaches. Early registration, available through March 5, 2026, is priced at $45. Late registration, from March 6 to March 7, will cost $50. Those registering on race day, between 6:00 am and 7:00 am, can participate for $60.

Participants can collect their race packets from March 2nd through March 7th at the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Headquarters, located at 3850 Justice Drive. Packet pick-up will be available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, and on Saturday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Race day packet pick-up will be available at Ascarate Park from 6:00 am to 7:00 am.

The race is scheduled to begin at 8:00 am at Ascarate Park, located at 6900 Delta. Awards will be presented to the top three overall male and female finishers, as well as the top three finishers in various age categories: 10 and under, 11-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 and over. There will also be awards for the top three First Responder category male and female finishers, and for the top three First Responder 4-person team, based on average race time.

The first 1000 registrants will receive both a race shirt and a medal. However, those who register after February 9, 2026, are not guaranteed their preferred shirt size. The event welcomes participants of all ages and abilities, and dogs and strollers are permitted on the course.

The 6th Annual Deputy Peter J. Herrera Memorial 5K Run/Walk provides an opportunity for the El Paso community to remember a fallen hero, support a worthy cause, and promote physical activity. It’s a chance to honor Deputy Herrera’s dedication to service and contribute to the future success of students through the scholarships fund.
