TANGERMÜNDE,​ Germany (AP) — The “Elberadeneniors,” a local cycling group,‌ gather weekly in⁣ Tangermünde for their regular ⁣ride. This week’s outing coincides with a special occasion: the 20th annual Elbe Needle day. Cycling enthusiasts and tourists from across the Altmark region are ‌joining the group for a scenic ride of more than 12 miles along the Elbe River.

Cyclists Converge in Arneburg⁤ for ⁣Elbe Needle day

As part of the festivities, cycling groups from neighboring towns including‌ Stendal, Seehausen, Werben, Schönhausen, and Havelberg are⁤ converging ⁤in Arneburg.The small ⁣town along the Elbe has prepared booths, guided city tours, and a cultural programme for the cyclists.Before returning to Tangermünde, the Elberadeneniors plan to visit the culture barn, enjoy local bratwurst, and participate in the Elbe‌ Needle Day celebrations.

Elberadweg Celebrates 30 Years

This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Elberadweg, the⁢ Elbe River bike path. simone tandek,⁣ from the Stendal road construction office, spearheaded the initiative three decades ago, partnering to expand the​ bike path in Saxony⁣ both north⁣ and south.

The Elberadweg now stretches approximately 808 ‌miles from its source in the⁣ Czech republic to ‍its mouth in Cuxhaven, ⁢Germany. About 186 miles of the path run through Saxony-Anhalt.

Tandek envisioned joint financing ⁤and marketing efforts by municipalities and tourism companies. Her vision has proven triumphant.Each summer, an estimated 25,000 cyclists travel the Elberadweg in the Altmark region.
