TANGERMÜNDE, Germany (AP) — The “Elberadeneniors,” a local cycling group, gather weekly in Tangermünde for their regular ride. This week’s outing coincides with a special occasion: the 20th annual Elbe Needle day. Cycling enthusiasts and tourists from across the Altmark region are joining the group for a scenic ride of more than 12 miles along the Elbe River.

As part of the festivities, cycling groups from neighboring towns including Stendal, Seehausen, Werben, Schönhausen, and Havelberg are converging in Arneburg. The small town along the Elbe has prepared booths, guided city tours, and a cultural programme for the cyclists. Before returning to Tangermünde, the Elberadeneniors plan to visit the culture barn, enjoy local bratwurst, and participate in the Elbe Needle Day celebrations.
Elberadweg Celebrates 30 Years
This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Elberadweg, the Elbe River bike path. simone tandek, from the Stendal road construction office, spearheaded the initiative three decades ago, partnering to expand the bike path in Saxony both north and south.
The Elberadweg now stretches approximately 808 miles from its source in the Czech republic to its mouth in Cuxhaven, Germany. About 186 miles of the path run through Saxony-Anhalt.
Tandek envisioned joint financing and marketing efforts by municipalities and tourism companies. Her vision has proven triumphant. Each summer, an estimated 25,000 cyclists travel the Elberadweg in the Altmark region.
It is indeed assumed that the cyclist will give an average of 80 to 90 euros per day. Then a small sum comes out. This is also really explicit business advancement,
Tandek said, highlighting the economic impact of cycle tourism.
Nature, Culture Draw Visitors
Tiemo Schönwald, an innkeeper from Tangermünde who operates a hotel, shop, and three restaurants, confirms the economic benefits. He estimates that Elberadweg cyclists account for 20% to 40% of his sales.
If the guests are a bit recovered the next day, then drink a cow tail beer with us or take a city tour with us,
Schönwald said.
Schönwald believes the combination of natural landscapes and cultural attractions, including the river scenery and historic half-timbered houses, appeals to visitors, especially those seeking respite from city life.
