Kersten Francilus, 25, has been charged with murder following the random stabbing death of a woman in her 70s in Stuart, Florida. The attack occurred on April 2, 2026, in the Southwood community of Martin County.
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek described the incident as an extremely violent
and unprovoked attack. The victim was walking her small dog in a neighborhood cul-de-sac when she was stabbed 16 times.
Sequence of Events
Prior to the assault, multiple residents had contacted 911 to report a suspicious man walking door-to-door. According to Sheriff Budensiek, the man had been interacting with different people and repeatedly asking where the new bank was
, despite there being no bank located in that area.
Witnesses who encountered the man during these interactions described him as calm and nonconfrontational. Shortly after these initial reports, authorities received additional emergency calls stating that the same man was attacking a woman.
A deputy who was already en route to investigate the reports of the suspicious person arrived at the scene to find Francilus on top of the victim. The sheriff stated that the suspect was actually actively stabbing her
as the deputy arrived.
When the deputy exited his patrol vehicle and drew his firearm, Francilus discarded the knife and surrendered. He was immediately taken into custody.
Emergency Response and Victim Outcome
During the attack, a good Samaritan attempted to intervene in an effort to stop the assault, but was unable to remove the assailant from the victim.
An off-duty deputy also responded to the scene and rendered medical aid to the woman. She was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where she died from significant injuries

Francilus made his first court appearance on April 3, 2026. Details regarding the struggle indicate that the victim grabbed a kitchen knife during the assault, which resulted in the suspect sustaining a stab wound.
