Begining October 1st, 2024, Irish electricity customers will see an average increase of €2.41 per month in their standing charges, adding approximately €29 annually to domestic electricity bills as confirmed by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU).
Standing charges are fixed fees customers pay regardless of their energy consumption, covering the costs of maintaining and upgrading the electricity network. This increase is intended to fund essential investments in the national grid operated by EirGrid and the distribution network managed by ESB networks.
The Financial Impact: A Closer Look
While the €2.41 increase represents an average, the actual impact will vary depending on individual supplier contracts and existing standing charge rates. Currently, standing charges can exceed €30 per month, and even surpass €60 on bi-monthly billing cycles according to the Irish Times. Crucially, this charge remains constant regardless of how much electricity a household consumes.
The CRU has approved a total of €2.7 billion in funding for network upgrades. ESB Networks will recieve €1.34 billion,while EirGrid will receive €1.39 billion.These funds are earmarked for maintaining and expanding the electricity infrastructure to accommodate increasing demand and facilitate the transition to renewable energy sources.
