Elfyn Evans enters the final day of Rally Italy Sardinia holding a provisional six-point lead in the World Rally Championship standings after Oliver Solberg surged from third to capture the rally lead on Saturday. Evans, who led the championship standings for 10 rounds and started the weekend with a 17-point advantage, faces an all-in-or-nothing title showdown across Sunday’s final four stages.
Evans Needs Five Points for WRC Title
Evans needs to claim five points from the 10 available across Super Sunday and the Power Stage to secure his maiden WRC title, regardless of what Solberg and fellow Toyota teammate Sami Pajari achieve. Pajari heads into the final day sitting 12 points adrift of Evans in the standings. Meanwhile, if Evans and Solberg finish tied on points, Solberg will claim the championship crown on countback if he secures the rally victory in Sardinia, which would mark his third win of the year.
Conservative Approach Costs Evans Valuable Ground
Reflecting on Saturday’s stages, Evans admitted that his cautious tactical approach may have cost him valuable ground against his rivals. Road position severely hampered Evans’s raw pace, while Hyundai driver Adrien Fourmaux snatched fourth position away from Evans on Saturday’s final stage.
We went with a more conservative approach. Obviously we were trying to stay out of punctures. It didn’t look like we were going to gain too much by risking all. In the end, maybe a less conservative approach would have been better.
Evans added that he is trapped between difficult choices on abrasive gravel tracks where pushing hard risks punctures while driving slowly surrenders competitive opportunities. He noted that his starting position on the road creates further disadvantages for cleaning on Sunday morning.
Solberg Target and Pajari Title Hopes
Oliver Solberg carries a 33.6-second lead over Sébastien Ogier into Sunday’s final four stages after delivering one of his finest drives of the season. Solberg stated that his objective is clear-cut.
The objective is clear, to take 10 points and after the Power Stage, we will see what happens. Elfyn has a load of pressure tomorrow too. He needs to really push and anything can happen to him too.
Sami Pajari remains mathematically eligible for the championship despite facing the largest deficit among the three contenders. Pajari expects high risk-taking across the field as multiple drivers target rally victory on Sardinia’s notoriously demanding stages.
