Mary Alice Drumm noted that changes are common at Pixar, emphasizing that the core elements of “Elio” remained consistent throughout the process.Sharafian added that her understanding with Molina helped ensure a smooth transition, trusting her instincts to align with his original vision.
Shi acknowledged the initial challenge of joining an ongoing project. She connected with the story through the theme of a “lonely boy who wants to get abducted, who is searching for belonging.” The sci-fi setting also offered a new creative outlet, allowing them to pay homage to films like John Carpenter’s “The Thing.”
The directors emphasized the importance of trust and collaboration within the team. Shi noted Sharafian’s evolution during a challenging sequence, where she combined elements from diffrent scenes to create a breakthrough moment.

“I felt fortunate that Adrian and I already had an understanding, that we had shared sensibilities, that he was entrusting me with this duty as he believed that our visions were similar,” Sharafian said.
