Pixar’s ‘Elio’ Explores Loneliness,Sci-Fi Homages,and Hidden Easter Eggs

Disney Pixar’s ”Elio” tells the story of a young orphan who dreams of alien abduction. directors Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian drew inspiration from sci-fi classics, particularly “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Shi noted the film’s mysterious tone regarding the aliens’ intentions influenced their approach to the Communiverse.
Adrian Molina co-wrote and initially directed the 28th Pixar feature. Shi and Sharafian, speaking from Annecy, discussed building upon Molina’s foundation, adding that they were given freedom to make meaningful changes, including Elio’s desire to be abducted.
“we added the idea that he wants to be abducted by aliens,” Sharafian explained, “which was a realy fun thing to play with, and that made him this weird, compelling character.” Shi added that their own childhood experiences as “lone, nerdy kids” inspired Elio’s character.
The directors also explored the theme of loneliness thru Elio’s relationship with his aunt Olga, voiced by Zoe Saldaña. Sharafian explained that Olga represents Earth for Elio, and he fails to see her loneliness until the end of the film.
Shi highlighted the importance of the core relationship between Olga and Elio,noting that making Olga Elio’s aunt,rather than his mother,added a layer of instability and conflict to their dynamic. This shift allowed them to personally relate to Olga’s character as a career woman overwhelmed by unexpected obligation.
Elio also finds connection with Glordon. Shi mentioned consulting with child psychologists and former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy,who emphasized the epidemic of loneliness and the difficulty people face in admitting their need for connection. Elio’s vulnerability in admitting his fears to Glordon marks a significant step in their friendship.
Regarding the film’s sci-fi references, Shi confirmed their shared love of horror influenced the inclusion of elements from ”Alien.” Sharafian added that the musicality of the Communiverse’s frist contact with Elio is a direct homage to “Close Encounters.”
Classic Pixar Easter eggs, including the Pizza Planet Truck and Luxo ball, are also hidden within the film. Additionally, there’s a hint at Pixar’s next movie, “Hopper,” and an Easter egg referencing Sharafian’s short film “Burrow.”
Ultimately, Shi hopes that “Elio” inspires audiences to share their struggles and connect with others, particularly in the current post-COVID world.
