Elisabeth Moss is preparing ⁣to say⁢ goodbye ⁤to ⁣”The Handmaid’s tale,” the Hulu series that became a cultural touchstone after ⁣its ‌2017 debut. The show, ⁤which resonated‍ with the political climate of ‍the time, also marked ⁤a significant step⁢ in Moss’s career, building on her ⁢success in “mad Men.”

Moss’s role evolved over the course of ⁤”The⁤ Handmaid’s Tale.”⁤ She became an executive producer and director, taking the helm for four episodes in⁢ the final season, including the series finale. As June’s fight for freedom played out‌ on ‌screen, Moss’s‍ personal life also changed. she took on more film and television projects,‍ including “Us,” “The Invisible Man,” “Shining Girls,” “The Veil,” and ‍the upcoming “Imperfect Women.” Becoming a ‌mother also shifted her perspective on her character’s ⁤driving motivation: reuniting with her ‌daughter.

Moss recalled a compliment from Max minghella after her directorial debut. “After I did my‍ first episode, he said to me, ‘You need ‍to go direct a ‘Batman’ movie,'” Moss said. “I was so complimented! ⁢I love sci-fi, horror. I’m not ‌going to do two people in a cabin.”

She also discussed the impact of being brought on as an executive ⁣producer and director early in the ‌show’s run. “There could not have been a better scenario for me to start,” Moss explained.‍ “I’ve never directed ⁤anything in my life before… it was because of Bruce ‍and Warren… I was⁤ a part of all the ⁣decisions that we made on the show.” she added that⁤ Warren Littlefield made her an executive producer in season 2, a season⁣ earlier than planned, as she was already performing the role.

by Season 3, moss felt ready to direct.⁤ “We almost ⁤did it in Season 3, but it‍ wasn’t going to be the best thing for the schedule. So, Season 4 came along, and we’d ‌thought about it for so long⁣ that it didn’t feel like a big leap. It felt like a lateral move,” she said.

Reflecting on her experiences with long-running television ‍shows, moss said, “I can’t imagine‍ not having that experience again in my life. To me, it is indeed ⁣the most rewarding.” She cited “Picket Fences” and “Mad Men” as formative⁤ experiences. “There’s something about the structure that I love⁢ so much,” she said. While she ‍won’t be⁤ directing⁤ “Imperfect Women” due to family⁣ commitments, she will remain involved as a⁣ producer.

Moss is also ‌set to executive produce “The Testaments,” the follow-up series to “The Handmaid’s ‍Tale.” “Actually, I⁤ feel so grateful for‍ it. I would be in‌ a much sadder headspace. There’s something about the fact ‌that it’s not over — that ⁤is ⁣very, very‌ good‍ for‌ me,” she said.

Regarding‍ the ⁤series finale’s connection to the pilot, with⁤ June narrating her surroundings in the waterfords’ ruined home,⁤ Moss said, “I don’t know when Bruce⁤ [Miller] came up with it…I don’t think it was there⁢ from the very beginning. ⁣But I ⁢love this‌ ending.” She added, “as someone who has lived telling this story for nine years,⁢ I can’t imagine it ending any⁤ other way… For me, that is television gold.”

“This whole series ⁣has always‌ been ‌about the same thing,” Moss stated. “It’s about how this woman will never, ever give up fighting for her children… The fact⁢ that ‍what she ⁣starts with is what she ends with,⁢ to me, is so fucking‌ genius.”

What’s next

As “The Handmaid’s Tale” concludes, Elisabeth Moss⁣ is set to continue her role as executive producer on “The Testaments,” ensuring her continued involvement‌ in ‍the world ‍of Gilead.
