Elliot James Reay: From Shopping Malls to TikTok Sensation
Elliot James Reay, a 23-year-old singer-songwriter from Bury, Greater Manchester, has transitioned from performing in shopping centers to achieving TikTok fame. Reay, inspired by teh Elvis Presley era, recently released his northern soul track, “Who Knew Dancing Was A Sin,” and is eager to share more of his music.

Reay’s journey included a tour of south East Asia and a visit to Elvis Presley’s Graceland home after receiving an award in Memphis,US. “It was a really eye-opening thing because I had never seen Memphis and I had my vision of it,” Reay said. “It was better than I imagined.”

After performing to large crowds in Malaysia, Vietnam, the philippines, and Indonesia, reay is briefly back home.”I was doing shopping malls and showing up and thousands of people were rocking up,” he said. His retro-inspired music has resonated with many fans. “I enjoy that sound and era but I feel like that, especially in South East Asia, thay do a lot of karaoke and the karaoke over there is all the 1960s up to the 90s.”
Touring is Reay’s priority, with gigs planned across England in July, followed by more international shows. ”I’ve got so many other songs that I’m itching to show everyone and release and obviously for my songs that are out, I just want to sing over and over and over again,” Reay stated. “I want to meet every single person that’s supported me and just thank them and show some respect as they got me where I am.”

Reay is working on an album, following the release of “Who Knew Dancing Was A Sin” in May. The song was inspired by his partner’s parents, who are Northern Soul fans. “They wanted a track written for their nights out and they said can you write us a Northern soul style track,” Reay explained.
The storyline involves his partner suspecting infidelity, but he’s actually just out dancing. “The main storyline of it was my partner thinks that I’m cheating on her but actually I’m going dancing and she’s asking me who are these people, who’s Jackie – we’re referencing Jackie Wilson there who’s probably one of the greats of the scene if you like,” he said. Reay added that the song carries a positive message about enjoying dancing without needing to explain oneself.
While his success soars, Reay relaxes by playing snooker. “It’s quite a relaxing game.I think I’ve always liked it even before I was doing music as a career like this,” he said.”I just get into a zone while I’m playing.”
