Elon Musk Calls for abolition of the European Union Following €120 Million Fine
Table of Contents
X (formerly Twitter) has been fined €120 million by the European Commission for violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA). Elon Musk responded by calling for the EU’s dissolution and a return to national sovereignty.
What Happened?
The European Commission imposed a €120 million fine on X on May 13, 2024, citing failures to comply with the Digital Services Act (DSA). the DSA, enacted in February 2024, aims to create a safer digital space for users in the European Union. The fine specifically addresses issues of transparency and deception related to X’s practices.
The core of the complaint centers around changes made to X’s verification system following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform in October 2022. Previously, blue checkmarks signified verified accounts, indicating authenticity. Under Musk’s ownership, these checkmarks became available for purchase through a subscription service, Twitter Blue (now X Premium), leading to confusion and potential misinformation.
The Digital Services Act (DSA) and X’s Violations
The DSA mandates that large online platforms take important steps to protect users from illegal content and harmful online activities.Key requirements include:
- Transparency Reporting: Platforms must be transparent about their content moderation policies and how they are enforced.
- Risk Assessments: Platforms must assess and mitigate systemic risks, such as the spread of illegal content and disinformation.
- User Empowerment: Users must have clear mechanisms to report illegal content and appeal content moderation decisions.
- Independent Audits: Platforms are subject to independent audits to ensure compliance.
The European Commission found that X failed to adequately address these requirements, particularly regarding transparency about how its algorithms function and the spread of illegal content. Specifically, the Commission cited concerns about:
- Lack of Transparency in Algorithm Design: X did not provide sufficient information about how its algorithms rank and recommend content.
- Insufficient Measures to Tackle Illegal Content: The platform’s response to reports of illegal content was deemed inadequate.
- Misleading Information Regarding Verification: The changes to the blue checkmark system created confusion and perhaps facilitated the spread of disinformation.
Musk’s Response and Call for Abolition
Elon Musk reacted strongly to the fine, taking to X to express his dissatisfaction with the European Union. He argued that “Europe is letting itself slide towards nothingness” and called for the abolition of the EU, advocating for a return to national sovereignty. He believes this would allow individual governments to better represent their citizens.
The EU should be abolished and (member) states regain their sovereignty, which would allow governments to better represent their citizens.
This is not the first time Musk has publicly criticized European regulations. He has previously expressed concerns about the DSA and other EU initiatives aimed at regulating technology companies.
