Updated‍ May 29, 2025

Elon musk, a prominent ally ⁤of President Donald Trump, has left his position as a special government employee after 128 days.Musk announced his departure Wednesday on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Musk stated ‌he was thankful for the prospect ⁣to reduce wasteful spending. He‌ added that the Department of Government efficiency (DOGE) mission would strengthen‌ over time.

The departure follows Musk’s criticism of Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” which proposes tax breaks for the wealthy while increasing military and immigration spending. These measures would be funded by cuts to clean energy, nutrition, education, ⁤and⁤ health ‍programs.

“I was disappointed to ⁣see the massive ‍spending bill, frankly, which increases ‌the budget deficit, not just decreases it,” musk told CBS’s “Sunday⁤ morning.” he‌ added that‍ the bill “undermines the work” of DOGE and ‍questioned whether the legislation could be both “big” and ”beautiful.”

Musk, who contributed over $250 million to Trump’s campaign, joined the management with the goal of cutting $1 trillion from the federal budget. According⁤ to the New York Times, he fell short of this objective.

What’s next

The White House has not yet announced a replacement⁢ for Musk. The ⁣future of the DOGE initiative remains uncertain following his departure.
