Elon Musk is now the wealthiest man in the world by a significant margin. An IPO of his space company is likely to significantly increase the Tesla boss’s financial weight.
According to a report by Forbes magazine, Tesla boss Elon Musk is now the first person in the world to have a fortune of more than $600 billion. The reason for the latest increase are reports that Musk’s space company SpaceX could be valued at $800 billion in a possible IPO.
That would increase Musk’s wealth by $168 billion to an estimated $677 billion, Forbes said. Musk holds a stake of around 42 percent in SpaceX, which plans to go public next year. The financial service Bloomberg saw Musk as having assets of around $470 billion on Monday.
His stake of around twelve percent in the electric car manufacturer Tesla also contributes to Musk’s wealth. Its shares have increased by 13 percent this year. They rose nearly four percent on Monday after Musk said Tesla was testing robotaxis without a safety driver in the passenger seat. According to a media report, Musk’s AI startup xAI is also in advanced discussions to raise $15 billion in fresh capital at a valuation of $230 billion.
In November, Tesla shareholders approved a $1 trillion pay package for Musk, supporting his vision of transforming the electric car maker into an artificial intelligence and robotics giant.
Musk only crossed the $500 billion mark in October of this year. In addition to Musk, Oracle founder Larry Ellison was the only person who managed to amass more than $300 billion, according to the Forbes report.
