Sportswear giant Elverys is set to breathe new life into the former Debenhams premises on Cork’s Patrick street, marking a significant investment in the city center’s retail landscape. the move, described as “going against the flow” by company representatives, signals a continued belief in the vibrancy of city centre shopping despite the growth of out-of-town retail parks.
A Return to Roots for Ireland’s Oldest sports Store
Elverys, boasting a history stretching back to 1847 – making it the oldest sports store in Ireland – is no stranger to Cork.Actually, the company operated a store at 78 Patrick Street as far back as 1935,and also had locations in Dublin and London simultaneously occurring. This new venture represents a return to its roots for the brand, which was acquired in the 1990s.
“Elverys are the oldest sports store in Ireland, it’s there as 1847, we only bought it in the 90s,” explained a company spokesperson. “There’s a history going back there of Elverys being associated with the foundation of the State.”
Addressing City Centre Retail Challenges
While Elverys currently operates a branch on Oliver Plunkett Street, staff will be transferred to the larger, flagship store on Patrick Street. The decision to locate in the city centre, rather than expanding its presence in retail parks – where it currently has 46 stores nationwide – is noteworthy.
The company acknowledges the challenges facing city centre retail, especially the difficulty in securing large enough spaces for major brands. However, Patrick Street offers a unique opportunity.
“We would see both sides of the coin, city centres are far from dead, but you can’t find the box size that big brands need in the town centres or small city centres,” the spokesperson stated. “Patrick Street isn’t like that, there’s a fantastic array, you have Penneys going to invest spectacularly, you have Brown thomas, you’ve all the major brands on Opera Lane in decent box sizes. So it’s a wonderful shopping precinct and that’s why we’ve been convinced to keep going.”
Building on a Track Record of Restoration
Elverys has a proven track record of successfully revitalizing vacant retail spaces. The company highlighted its restoration of a store in Bridge Street, Tralee, which had been empty for 15 years, as an example of its commitment to breathing new life into towns and cities.
This experience will be crucial as they tackle the considerable Debenhams unit. The company aims to replicate this success in Cork, contributing to the ongoing regeneration of Patrick Street.
planning Permission and Timeline
The planning request for the project was recently submitted to Cork City Council. According to company representatives, the council requires “a few days’ grace” to upload the extensive documentation.
A new chapter in Elverys’ long history is set to open for sports enthusiasts in Cork in the coming months, promising a significant boost to the city’s retail offering and a testament to the enduring appeal of the city centre shopping experience.
