Elvis in Vegas: Lost Concert Footage Restored for New Film

Elvis in Vegas: Lost Concert Footage Restored for New Film

February 25, 2026 Marcus Rodriguez - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Baz Luhrmann is once again bringing the King to the big screen, but this time it’s not a biographical drama. February 20th, Luhrmann unveiled “EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert,” a concert documentary constructed from previously unseen footage of Elvis Presley’s legendary Las Vegas residency. The film, which expands to wider release on February 27th, offers a remarkably intimate glimpse into a pivotal period of Presley’s career, a period largely obscured by the passage of time and the limited availability of high-quality recordings.

The source of this cinematic resurrection is extraordinary. For fifty years, approximately 59 hours of negatives documenting Presley’s seven-year run at the International Hotel – now the Westgate Las Vegas Resort – lay dormant in a salt mine, part of Warner Bros.’ vault. Discovered while Luhrmann was researching his 2022 biopic, “Elvis,” the footage has undergone a painstaking two-year restoration process, transforming fragmented reels into a cohesive and electrifying concert experience. The project involved not only Luhrmann’s team but also the expertise of Peter Jackson, known for his own meticulous restoration work on historical footage.

What distinguishes “EPiC” from existing Elvis concert films isn’t simply the novelty of unseen material, but the perspective it offers. The documentary focuses heavily on Presley’s 1970s Las Vegas residency, a period described by Luhrmann as the artist being “at the absolute pinnacle, almost like he’s flying so close to the sun.” This wasn’t the later-era Elvis often depicted in Halloween costumes, but a lean, confident performer commanding the stage with an almost superhuman energy. The film captures Presley at a moment of peak performance, a point Luhrmann emphasizes as being both intensely human and almost otherworldly.

The footage reveals a performer deeply engaged with his craft, rehearsing with a focused intensity, directing his band, and interacting with fans in a way that feels remarkably candid. Beyond the iconic songs – “Suspicious Minds” and “Burning Love” are specifically highlighted – the documentary showcases Presley’s improvisational skills, his playful banter with the audience, and his genuine connection with those who came to see him. The film doesn’t shy away from the spectacle of the era, showing Presley’s interactions with adoring fans, including moments of playful affection.

A particularly compelling element of “EPiC” is the inclusion of a newly unearthed interview with Presley himself. This allows the artist to narrate his own story, offering a personal perspective on his life and career. The interview provides context and insight into the mindset of a performer at the height of his powers, grappling with fame, expectation, and the demands of a relentless performance schedule.

The discovery of this footage is particularly significant given the limited existing documentation of Presley’s Las Vegas years. While the residency consisted of 636 performances, existing clips are often grainy and incomplete. “EPiC” promises to fill a crucial gap in the Elvis Presley archive, offering fans a chance to experience these performances as they were originally intended – in vibrant detail and with a renewed sense of immediacy. The film’s release in IMAX further enhances this immersive experience, allowing audiences to witness Presley’s stage presence on a scale befitting his legendary status.

Luhrmann’s involvement is also noteworthy. Having already demonstrated his ability to capture Presley’s essence in his 2022 biopic, he brings a unique understanding of the artist’s complexities and contradictions to this project. His approach, as evidenced by his previous work, is characterized by a visual flair and a willingness to embrace the spectacle of performance. “EPiC” appears to be a natural extension of this aesthetic, offering a visually stunning and emotionally resonant tribute to the King of Rock and Roll.

The film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival generated considerable excitement, with early reactions suggesting it’s a must-see for Elvis fans. The project represents more than just a nostalgic trip down memory lane; it’s a rediscovery of a performer at his most vital and a testament to the enduring power of his music. The unearthed footage, meticulously restored and thoughtfully presented, offers a fresh perspective on a well-documented life, reminding audiences why Elvis Presley remains a cultural icon decades after his death.

The restoration process itself is a feat of cinematic preservation. The 35-millimeter film, rescued from the unusual storage location, required extensive work to bring it back to its original quality. This painstaking effort underscores the importance of preserving historical footage and making it accessible to future generations. “EPiC” serves as a powerful reminder of the cultural treasures that can be found in unexpected places, waiting to be rediscovered and shared with the world.
