Elvis Smylie won the Australian PGA Championship, defeating Cameron Smith. At 22 years old, Smylie, the son of former tennis star Liz Smylie, played a strong final round, finishing with a score of 14 under (65, 67, 67). Smith, a three-time winner, finished two shots behind with a total of 12 under (67, 65, 69).

Smylie displayed skill throughout the match, making crucial par saves even when he missed fairways and greens. He started with a one-shot lead, and despite Smith’s effort to catch up with a birdie on the 15th, Smylie maintained his composure.

After a rain interruption reduced the tournament to 54 holes, Smylie and Smith shared the lead after the second round. Anthony Quayle finished third with an impressive final round of 63, ending at 11 under.

Exclusive Interview: Elvis Smylie Discusses His Win at the Australian PGA Championship

NewsDirectory3: Congratulations on your stunning victory at the Australian PGA Championship, Elvis! How does it feel to take home the title, especially at such a young age?

Elvis Smylie: Thank you! It feels absolutely incredible. Winning this championship has been a dream of mine, and to do it at just 22 makes it even more special. I’ve worked hard, and this win validates all the effort I’ve put in.

NewsDirectory3: You played a fantastic final round, finishing 14 under overall. Can you walk us through your round and any key moments that stood out?

Elvis Smylie: Sure! The final round was intense. I started with a one-shot lead, which added some pressure. There were definitely a few crucial moments. I remember missing a couple of fairways and greens, but I stayed focused and made some important par saves. Cameron made a great birdie on the 15th, and that could’ve shifted the momentum. But I kept my composure and was determined to stick to my game plan.

NewsDirectory3: You shared the lead with Cameron Smith after the rain-interrupted second round. What was your mindset going into the final round knowing you were tied?

Elvis Smylie: My mindset was centered on staying calm and not letting the situation overwhelm me. I knew Cameron was an experienced competitor, so I had to just focus on my game. I told myself to treat it just like any other round, focusing on each shot rather than the scoreboard.

NewsDirectory3: Can you tell us about your relationship with your mother, Liz Smylie, a former tennis star? How has her career influenced you as a golfer?

Elvis Smylie: My mom has been a huge influence in my life, not just in sports but in everything. Growing up with a professional athlete as a parent taught me a lot about discipline, resilience, and handling pressure. She was my biggest supporter, and I’m grateful for all that she’s taught me about striving for excellence.

NewsDirectory3: With this victory, you secured a cash prize of $323,000 and a two-year exemption on the DP World Tour. What does that mean for your career moving forward?

Elvis Smylie: It’s a significant boost for my career. The financial aspect helps relieve some pressures, allowing me to focus on training and competing without worrying about immediate expenses. The exemption on the DP World Tour opens up so many opportunities for me to compete at a higher level and gain invaluable experience.

NewsDirectory3: What’s next for you after this win? Any upcoming tournaments or goals you’re setting for yourself?

Elvis Smylie: I’m going to take a little time to celebrate this win with my team and my family, but I’m eager to get back to work. My goal is to perform well on the DP World Tour and continue improving my game. Every tournament is a learning opportunity, and I’m excited for what’s next.

NewsDirectory3: Thank you for your time, Elvis, and once again, congratulations on your remarkable achievement!

Elvis Smylie: Thank you! I appreciate the support and look forward to the future.

David Micheluzzi, who celebrated with Smylie on the 18th green, finished fifth at 10 under. Jason Day and defending champion Min Woo Lee had respectable finishes, with Day placing eighth and Lee just behind him after a strong round of 66.

This victory not only secured Smylie a cash prize of $323,000 but also a two-year exemption on the DP World Tour, marking an important milestone in his career.
