Embrace Winter Workouts: Join the November Project for Outdoor Fitness and Community
November Project: A Community for Winter Workouts
November Project is a free outdoor exercise group that encourages people to stay fit, no matter the weather. It started in 2011 in Boston when two friends wanted to motivate each other to exercise every morning in November. Their idea attracted others, and the movement grew. Now, it has 52 groups in eight countries, including 44 in the U.S. and Canada.
Participants of all ages and fitness levels join the workouts. They often start with “The Bounce,” a fun chant and jump to unite the group. Workouts typically include running, bodyweight exercises like squats, and use outdoor features, such as stairs in sports stadiums.
The November Project emphasizes fun and community. Members play games that recall childhood, helping to break down barriers and build friendships. They celebrate milestones and offer prizes to encourage progress.
To work out effectively in the winter, consider these tips from November Project leaders:
-
Find Workout Friends: Join a group for support. Accountability to teammates helps you stay committed.
-
Invest in Cold-Weather Clothing: Wear layers that wick sweat away from your skin. This helps keep you dry and warm. Avoid cotton, as it traps moisture.
-
Establish a Routine: Commit to exercising at the same times on specific days for a month to create a habit.
- Make it Fun: Keep the atmosphere light-hearted. Enjoying your workout makes it more likely you’ll stick with it.
Tanis Smith, a participant from Edmonton, describes the group as a “chosen family.” She enjoys the social aspect and believes you can have fun while getting fit.
