Embracing Life with Cerebral Palsy: Challenges & Blessings of My Journey

Embracing Life with Cerebral Palsy: Challenges & Blessings of My Journey

November 23, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

New Job, New Journey

I recently started a new job in 2024. Transitioning to a new team can feel uncertain. I strive to accept my cerebral palsy while showcasing the other aspects of my identity.

Since 2016, I haven’t worked with a new team. This change reminds me of the lessons learned and the experiences gained over the years. Here are some insights I want to share:

I am a disabled person in the workplace. I embrace this aspect of my identity. I identify my condition specifically as cerebral palsy. I believe using “cerebral palsy” instead of “disability” fosters better understanding. Disability can mean different things to different people based on their experiences.

Cerebral palsy is part of who I am. It comes with challenges but also strengths. There are over 17 million people worldwide with similar characteristics. While some symptoms can be uncomfortable, I recognize the determination that accompanies my condition. I am proud of that determination.

My journey has unique milestones. I cherish the ordinary life I’ve built. I have learned to embrace change and aging. Some days I feel tired while others bring energy. This fluctuation is part of my experience.

Starting something new can be exhausting. I choose to begin anyway and keep going. I am currently working part-time, aiming for a manageable pace. I discover my limits only after exceeding them. My body requires practice. Some tasks will always require effort, but I compensate with quick thinking.

I share stories about my cerebral palsy with new colleagues. I want them to understand my experience. Finding common ground strengthens our connections. Eventually, they will become comfortable with my needs and can joke with me, making work enjoyable.

My goal is to be patient with myself and this new job. I know I can learn, listen, and build relationships. Connecting with people is my favorite part of work, and I am eager to dive into this new chapter!
