Emergency Fire Controlled at UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Plant After Drone Attack – Safety Confirmed

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) confirmed today that a fire broke out at an auxiliary generator outside the perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra region, following a drone attack. Official statements from the UAE Ministry of Defence and Abu Dhabi Media Office confirmed that three drones entered the country from the western border, with one striking the generator. The incident, which occurred on May 17, 2026, did not result in injuries or affect the plant’s safety systems, according to the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR).

The UAE Ministry of Defence stated in a statement that investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the attack. “Three drones were intercepted, with one causing the fire at the generator,” the ministry said. The Abu Dhabi Media Office added that the fire was contained and that the FANR confirmed the plant’s safety and operational readiness remained unaffected.

In a separate development, UAE Crown Prince Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan held phone calls with foreign ministers from allied nations to discuss the incident’s implications. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) noted that the calls focused on the “cowardly terrorist targeting” near the Barakah plant, underscoring the regional security concerns raised by the attack.

Barakah, the UAE’s first nuclear power plant, is operated by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and comprises four reactors. The plant has been operational since 2020, supplying a significant portion of the UAE’s electricity needs. The FANR has repeatedly emphasized its adherence to international safety standards, including those set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The drone attack marks the latest in a series of security incidents targeting critical infrastructure in the Gulf region. While the UAE has not attributed responsibility for the incident, regional tensions and geopolitical rivalries have fueled speculation about potential state or non-state actors involved.
