Public health authorities and medical providers are preparing for the 2025-2026 influenza season with updated vaccine compositions and expanded administration options. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published its recommendations for the upcoming season, emphasizing the importance of yearly vaccination to reduce the risk of flu and its potentially serious complications.
Vaccine Composition and Formulations
All influenza vaccines for the 2025-2026 season will be trivalent. These vaccines are formulated to protect against three primary seasonal influenza Type A and B viruses: an A(H1N1) virus, an A(H3N2) virus, and a B/Victoria lineage virus.
For the 2025-2026 season, the CDC recommends seasonal flu vaccination for adults, pregnant women, and children using only single-dose formulations of the flu vaccine that are free of thimerosal as a preservative.
FDA Approvals and Expanded Access
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has introduced several updates to the available vaccine options. In March 2025, the FDA approved FluBlok, a recombinant influenza vaccine, for use in individuals aged 9 years and older. This represents an expansion of the vaccine’s approved use, as it was previously approved only for those aged 18 years and older.
in September 2024, the FDA approved FluMist, the live attenuated influenza vaccine, for administration by either a caregiver or the patient themselves.
These regulatory updates followed recommendations made by the FDA on March 13, 2025, regarding the specific composition of the 2025-2026 U.S. Influenza vaccines.
Ordering and Distribution Timelines
The process for securing vaccine doses begins well before the start of the flu season. In the United States, pre-booking—the process of ordering doses for the following year’s season—typically commences before the current season has concluded.
Different distribution channels have established specific deadlines for the 2025-2026 cycle:
- For certain providers, pre-books for GSK, Sanofi, and Seqirus that were not canceled by April 15, 2025, automatically converted into orders.
- Within specific military supply channels, such as the USAMMCE, customer orders for the 2025-2026 season were required to be submitted no later than August 15, 2025.
These orders are often validated against forecasts, such as those provided by AFRICOM/EUCOM, to ensure adequate supply. In some instances, orders may be placed on hold or substituted with alternative vaccines while awaiting arrival at distribution centers.
Public Health Implementation
Vaccines for the 2025-2026 season are available for use in individuals aged 6 months and older. Health care providers are encouraged to support their patients in making informed decisions regarding these vaccinations to ensure maximum community protection.
In other regions, such as France, reports indicate adjustments to the vaccine procurement process, including a one-month extension of the pre-order period for seasonal influenza vaccines.
