Emily Deschanel, the beloved star of the long-running Fox series “Bones,” recently opened up about the intense anxiety she experienced during the show’s early days. The actress revealed that the pressure of memorizing lines, coupled with a lack of sleep, led to notable stress, even impacting her punctuality on set.
The Weight of Performance: Anxiety and Sleep Deprivation
Deschanel described a period where the demands of her role as Dr. Temperance Brennan took a heavy toll.”I’d come to set and I would be trying to remember the lines that…I got no sleep and trying to remember the lines that I had memorized the night before and then I had them in my head and couldn’t remember them,” she shared. This struggle with memory and exhaustion was a direct consequence of the immense pressure she felt to deliver a flawless performance.
A Commute Mishap and a Creator’s Concern
The peak of her anxiety manifested in a stressful incident where an accident during her commute caused her to arrive 30 minutes late to set. This lateness, a rare occurrence for the actress, led to a serious conversation with the series creator, Hart Hanson.
“Hart knocked on my trailer door, which was not a usual thing, he wasn’t knocking on my door often,” Deschanel recalled. “He took me aside and says, ’The studio has concerns about yoru work.’ They said that I was late and unprepared. That to me – I get emotional just thinking about it now because it was probably shame.”
The actress admitted the feedback hit her hard. “I mean, I was a wreck. I took it so hard,” she added. “I was such a fragile person at the time. I got hardened up doing that show for so long. I was not sleeping,I was so stressed out.I was already, I’m an emotional person, so I was just beside myself.”
Finding Support and a Path Forward
Following this challenging conversation, Deschanel was persistent to improve her punctuality and preparedness. Fortunately, the support she received from Hart Hanson proved instrumental in her journey. The day after their talk, the show was picked up for additional episodes, a testament to its growing success.
Hanson actively helped Deschanel navigate her challenges. He arranged for her to have a larger trailer and allocated more time for her to run lines, recognizing the need for better support for his lead actress.
“hart helped me find ways to be better, get my job done in terms of learning my lines and remembering them,” Deschanel said. “A lot of it was having downtime or having some scene that I’m not in, etc. He’s just a good one. We were so lucky.”
