In anticipation of her upcoming exhibition, “Nevada Roadsides: Northern Routes,” set to open at the Courthouse Gallery on October 2, 2024, we had the opportunity to sit down with artist Emily Najera. With her vibrant photographs, Najera invites viewers to experience familiar Nevada landmarks through her unique perspective.
News Directory: Emily, your exhibition focuses on Nevada’s landscapes. What motivated you to capture these specific locations?
Emily Najera: I’ve always been fascinated by the beauty that exists just off the beaten path. Nevada has such a diverse range of landscapes, and I wanted to highlight the often-overlooked roadside treasures. My goal is to show the vibrancy and life that these familiar places hold, encouraging both locals and visitors to appreciate the stunning scenery that surrounds them.
ND: Your work is known for its vibrant colors. How do you approach the process of shooting and editing your photographs to achieve that effect?
EN: Color is a critical element in my photography. When I’m on location, I try to capture the moment when the light is just right, whether it’s during sunrise or sunset. After capturing the images, I use editing software to enhance the colors while maintaining the natural essence of the scene. It’s about finding that balance between reality and my artistic interpretation.
ND: The exhibition includes a reception hosted by the Capital City Arts Initiative. What do you hope attendees take away from this event?
EN: I hope that people come away with a renewed appreciation for our local scenery. I want them to feel a connection to the landscapes and perhaps even inspire them to take a road trip and see these places for themselves. I’m excited to share the stories behind the photographs, and I hope to engage in meaningful conversations with attendees about their own experiences with these locations.
ND: What do you think makes “Nevada Roadsides: Northern Routes” different from other exhibitions you’ve participated in?
EN: Each exhibition has its unique focus, but this one holds a special place in my heart because it explores themes of familiarity and nostalgia. Many of the locations in my photographs are places I grew up with and have personal stories linked to them. I think visitors will relate to them on a deeper level since they likely have their own connections to the landscapes of Nevada.
ND: can you share what you are most looking forward to about the exhibition?
EN: I’m most looking forward to the reception on October 9. It will be such a joy to meet people who share an interest in art and photography. I believe that art thrives in community, and I can’t wait to connect with everyone and hear their thoughts on the work I’ve created.
