INDIAN WELLS, Calif.— Emma Raducanu has spoken out about a disturbing encounter with a stalker during the Dubai Tennis Championships in February, revealing the emotional toll the incident took on her.
In her first media appearance since the event, Raducanu described the experience as impactful, but affirmed her resolve to continue pursuing her tennis career. The 2021 U.S. Open champion recounted the episode, which occurred during her match against Karolina Muchova on Feb. 18.
Disturbing Discovery During Match
Raducanu noticed the man, who she said had previously left her a note and taken her photograph, early in the match. “I saw him in the first game of the match,” Raducanu told The Athletic, “and thought: ’I don’t know how to end it.’ I had difficulty seeing my tears, and I could hardly breathe.”
Visibly shaken, Raducanu sought assistance from the chair umpire, pointing out the man’s presence and seeking refuge behind the umpire’s chair. Security personnel promptly removed the individual from the venue.
WTA Intervention and Legal Action
The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) issued a statement confirming the individual’s removal from the tournament due to his concerning behavior.Authorities in Dubai confirmed the man had left a note for Raducanu, photographed her, and displayed troubling behavior during the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
Raducanu has as obtained an injunction against the man, barring him from attending future tournaments.
Emotional Aftermath
The incident left Raducanu deeply affected. She revealed to the Athletic that she felt “very broken” during the match.The emotional distress lingered after the match, leading to tears and a week-long recovery period.
Looking ahead to Indian Wells
After spending time with her family in England, Raducanu is now preparing to compete at the Indian Wells Open. Resolute not to let the experience deter her, she stated, “There is a part of you who thinks: ‘I don’t let a middle-aged guy prevent what I love.'”
Raducanu, currently ranked No.55 in the world, is scheduled to face Moyuka Uchijima in her opening match at Indian Wells on Thursday.
